What are Transitions?

This is a question we regularly get in our practice so we thought that we would answer some of the questions people ask about transitions.

82% of people tell us that glare affects their vision outside. 60% of people suffer from tired eyes as evening approaches. 100% of our customers will be affected by harmful UVA and UVB rays. 73% of our patients tell us their eyes are sensitive to light. If any of these statements rings a bell with yourself, then Transitions lenses would be the way to go.

Transitions are our recommended brand of photochromic lenses, which enable the lenses to rapidly darken when they are exposed to ultraviolet light. The greater the intensity of UV rays, the darker the lens becomes. However, when UV light is not longer present (indoors or night time), the lenses fade back to their clear state.

This means that one pair of glasses can be both clear and sunglasses, making life easier for all.

There are now two different forms of transitions, designed to fit to your personal needs, you can get either the Transitions signature lenses or the Transition XTRActive lenses.

What is the Difference between the two?

The Transition signature lenses are the original design, and these work when you are outside. However, due to the UV blocker (which blocks around 99% of UV light) in your car windscreen, they do not work when you are driving. The Transition XTRActive however have a specially designed formula that responds to both UV light and short wavelength visible light, so they are able to tint behind the windscreen.

When they are not in UV light, the Transitions lenses are completely clear and the Transition XTRActive has an unnoticeable slight tint.

Transitions can be combined with almost all prescriptions and visible needs and can be combined with anti-reflection coatings that will compliment the features of the transition lens.

What are transitions?

With both the Transitions and the XTRactive you can have your choice of colour which come in grey, brown and graphite green. You can also fit the lenses to your visual preferences.

Transition lenses adapt to your lifestyle. They adjust from clear indoors to dark outdoors and everything in between. No matter where you are, or what situation you’re in, Transitions lenses adapt to the perfect shade so you see well. The lenses change effortlessly, but the technology behind them is anything but simple. A complex formula of photochromic molecules make light, dark and every shade in between possible.

When Transitions lenses are exposed to UV light, trillions of photochromic molecules in the lens begin to change structure. This reaction is what causes the lenses to darken.

Transitions lenses are designed to be worn all day long, outdoors and indoors. And you can get them on virtually every frame, style, size and prescription. They are also perfect for children.

Transitions don’t just make everything look great, they also reduce eye fatigue and strain, while blocking out 100% of UVA/UVB light.
